Case Study: Ima-Schelling Installation

More transparency and faster commissioning

Ima-Schelling is one of the world’s leaders in the technical field of cut-to-size, precision saw technology. For over 100 years Ima-Schelling have been the experts in machine and plant construction, renowned for quality and their high standards. Their machines are operated across multiple sectors including furniture and kitchens and the aerospace industry. They are experienced in working with aluminium, plastics, and circuit boards. Client: Ima-Schelling, Dietmar Nussbaumer, Technical Director and Digitalisation Officer Problem: We produce bespoke, complex machines and systems. Ensuring the fastest possible commissioning that meets our customers exacting requirements is critical, while reducing the waste of vital human resources. Before we engaged Senseforce, we facilitated our commissioning with a project management system. In order to ensure the coordination between project managers, technicians, control engineers and our customers we needed multiple face to face conversations and telephone calls, all of which was very time-consuming and not cost effective.We saw great potential for process optimisation using a digitalisation solution. Solution: We came to Senseforce because we saw in another industrial company that the use cases, and applications of digitalisation technology were exactly the same as our requirements, even though our products and related process technologies were very different. As an SME we were not able to create our own digitalisation solution, so together with Künz we designed a solution tailored towards machine manufacturing. Above all, flexibility was important to us because the world is evolving, especially in regards to digitalisation. We wanted to be able to spontaneously merge a wide variety of data sets in order to gain important insights when the time came. During installation and start-up we now collect machine data for which we have defined performance figures. When the performance figures are exceeded, we have set up an information chain, the information is then forwarded back to the organisation. Having been able to record, store and properly process bulk data with Senseforce over a long period of time, we noticed that the data we recorded earlier was not consistent enough. The first important step for any company is a data cleansing. Only real data can be used to make informed decisions. Resolution: Today, commissioning starts with our new digitalisation solution. The machines are connected so that they are on the screen with us remotely. This is not only a great help for the control technicians on site, but it is also important in order for us to be able to communicate success to our customers in a transparent way. The team leaders in- house are provided with daily reports so that they can guide the employees on site. A weekly update on the live status of the entire commissioning is available for management in order to be able to coordinate the progress across projects. During commissioning, the data quality of the error messages plays a major role. We could understand that accumulated error messages were mostly consequential errors that were brought about by the higher-level control system and not by the machines themselves. Through these insights, we were able to improve communication with our customers and shorten the time of commissioning. We also use Senseforce on legacy machines where there had been customer satisfaction issues. We were able to solve problems surrounding technical availability in a plant quickly, problems we had already worked for several months without success using the old methodology.
